Tuesday, May 20, 2014 - Islamabad—With a great applause and honour Pakistan Street Children Football team was welcomed to the embassy of Brazil at Islamabad. Embassy of Brazil arranged shields, awards, gifts and sumptuous lunch for the team on Monday.
This is the second time the Embassy of Brazil hosted an event with Pakistan street children football team. The first time it was in March 2013, when the Embassy brought to Pakistan theBrazilian music group “Patubate” (who uses recycled and garbage items as musical instruments).
While welcoming the team, Ambassador Alfredo Leoni underlined importance of sports as a tool for social organizations and institutions to promote education and take children out of the streets. He praised the young Pakistani footballers for their achievement in Brazil, which will be an inspiration for all children in Pakistan.
He thanked the presence at the event of representatives of Azad Foundation, Muslim Hands, Mashal Model School, Luttuce Bee Kids and Rah-e-Amal, and appreciated excellent work done by these institutions in helping children in need. He then distributed shields among Pakistani street children footballers, their coach, the Chairman of Azad Foundation and the director of Muslim Hands, as well as prizes for the winners of the football goal competition which marked beginning of the event.
The ceremony was attended by members of Pakistan street children football team, their coach, Mr. Abdual Rashid, and representatives of the Pakistani institutions who supported the team: Mr. Naveed Hasan Khan (Chairman of Azad Foundation), Mr. Amjad Rasool (Director of Muslim Hands) and Mr. John Wroe, CEO of the NGO Street Child World Cup.
The children from three institutions in Islamabad and Rawalpindi who deal with children in need: Mashal Model School, Lettuce Bee Kids and Rah-e-Amal; students of the Portuguese Language Course and the Capoeira (the traditional Brazilian wrestling sports) Course of the Embassy also enjoyed the football match arranged by the Embassy. Mr. Dan Dohrmann (Country Representative of UNICEF), Mr. Marc Saba (Country Representative of UNAIDS), Mr. David Skinner (Country Representative of Save the Children) and Ms. Nageen Hyatt (Director of Nomad Culture Centre) appreciated the sincere efforts of the ambassador Alferado Leoni who always takes keen interest in arranging such events for the people of Pakistan and believes in bringing the two nations closer and facilitating people to people interaction.
The Street Child World Cup is a global movement for street children to promote protection of the street children and create and opportunities that all other children are entitled to. Ahead of each FIFA World Cup, they unite street children from across five continents to play football and unite in a unique international conference. Together through football, art and campaigning their aim is to challenge the negative perceptions and treatment of street children around the world.
